South Africa
Richards Bay
After a fun but really really hot day in Madagascar (and two more days at sea) we landed at the rather industrial (coal; aluminium) port of Richards Bay, South Africa. There's not a heck of a lot here, but it's a convenient stopping-off point for two different safaris (Phinda Private Game Reserve, Hluhluwe-Umfoloze Game Reserve) -- which we didn't do, and a two hour cruise on huge Lake St. Lucia (which we did). Our you could go the shopping mail, but inexplicably you're admonished that you are prohibited from taking photos there. We're not going to a shopping center where we can't take photos! Actually... we couldn't care about the mail... with or without photographs.
Back to the river cruise: the area has been under drought conditions for 8 years, so the water level was quite low and the "up to 526 bird species" more like... ten. But we did see loads of lounging hippos, a few birds, and a coupla of crocodiles. Both the hippos and crocs look pretty menacing. Think we'd stay out of this river. Oh, and a two-meter long crocodile, we're told, can jump two meters high out of the water. Keep your extremities in the boat, please.
Durban & Lesotho
Kathy didn't get a tour Escort position; Scott went on a 12 hour "trek" to the Kingdom of Lesotho. It's wholly located within South Africa's borders. Anyway, that trip calls for some extra space for photos, so you can see and read about it here.
Port Elizabeth
We've been healthy thoughout nearly 3 month on board and a score of countries. Guess our luck ran out, briefly. Scott had had some "intestinal irregularities" and nausea but it passed in a day. Now, a couple of days later, Kathy was stricken. She'd gotten up early for Escort duty to the Ado Elephant National Park, gotten dressed and prepared for her duties, and left for the bus. A few minutes later she came back to the room... felt a little "off". It it's a good thing she'd come back to the cabin; she ended up staying in it the better part of two days while whatever she'd picked up worked it's way out. We'll spare you the details.
